Transcriptions of Chinese Melodies
Jean-Baptiste du Halde Description de la Chine Paris 1735 Biblioteque nationale de France, FOL-O2N-39
Du Halde's voluminous report, the first major source of transcriptions of music from China, was compiled in France based on accounts sent to him by Jesuit missionaries. The first of the "Airs Chinois" on this page became emblematic of Chinese music in Europe.
