Click for full-size imageIn this late treatise, Rameau discusses musical systems from various cultural contexts in order to marshal support for the purported universality of his theoretical system. His understanding of pentatonicism in Chinese music is based on information from Du Halde and Amiot. Like many of his contemporaries, Rameau believed that pentatonicism provided evidence for a common ancestry of all musical systems.
